Valentine's Day

Suburban Post-Modernist

I sang along with songs like "Just the Way You Are"
And all of the other love songs that the cover band played
While I watched the couples dancing in a mess of red balloons
I carved initials on the table with a switchblade
I ordered up a drink from the counter
That frankly I couldn't afford
Talked about politics with some Republican waitress
And by 11 I was terribly bored

Happy goddamn Valentines day
I left when the band started "Come Go With Me"
the table next to me had been empty all night
happy Valentines day, indeed

I'm living closer to the new downtown
Than I was when I last heard from you
On a clear night I can hear the drive-up windows
at the fast food places out on Cedar Avenue
Yesterday I thought that I saw you
Walking out in front of city hall
But when I got up closer it was just some other girl
Who didn't really look like you at all

Happy goddamn Valentines day,
I'm getting tired of these same old streets
I'm running out of money, and I'm running out of time
happy Valentines day, indeed

I'll write another letter, but I know I'll never mail it
I don't know what your address is these days
Somebody said that you've left Cincinnati
But you're sure not back in Cornersville Trace
There are always good movies on TV
But they never get you off my mind
Cause I wonder where you are whenever it snows
And lately it's been snowing all the time

Happy goddamn Valentines day
I'm sure you never even think about me
Well if anyone asks, I don't think about you either
happy Valentines day, indeed
