LET THE TOAST PASS
Copyright 2000 by Adam Selzer, All Rights Reserved, ASCAP

Here's to Hook-finger Lewis and Richard the Saw
only lost once when we fought with the law
from the twelve dollar robbery I finally was caught
but they couldn't take Lewis, he'd died from the shot

Here's to the shopkeeper who fired off the round
that took poor old Lewis right down to the ground
and shattered the leg of the man at the door
well, the poor guy was only defending his store

CHORUS:
Let the toast pass, drink to the last
when the moon goes away the sun rises so fast
let the toast pass, drink to the last
and may your cups never run dry

Here's to the working and invalid poor
all of the friends I won't see anymore
I hope they can get all their food on their own
if they can, then I haven't been working alone

And to the street singer in the burgundy dress
that looked like sweet wine spilling over her breast
I'll never more hear her, her face I'll not see
but I did, so I'm blessed as a man ought to be

Let the toast pass, drink to the last
this time I got them to pay for the glass
let the toast pass, drink to the last
and may your cups never run dry

Here's to the mayor and the rest of his men
who have been at their jobs since the good lord knows when
they're lowering taxes at the end of the year
at least for the wealthy from what I can hear

Here's to the warden and here's to the guard
I'll follow you peacefully out to the yard
I'll try not to sneeze and I'll smile at the crowd
and I'll only flinch if the guns are too loud

Let the toast pass, drink to the last
ask them if they'll fly the flag at half-mast
let the toast pass, drink to the last
and may your cup never run dry
